FEATURE/SKIING Magazine Names the Top Ten Ski Areas in North America in Its November 2001 Adventure Guide

Whistler/Blackcomb Tops the List for the Third Consecutive Year
BOULDER, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE FEATURES)--October 16, 2000-- SKIING magazine polled its editors, contributing writers, and a select group of professional skiers to determine the top ten ski resorts in North America. The list is part of SKIING's Adventure Guide 2001, the heart of the magazine's November issue, on sale October 17 (cover price $3.99). For the third year in a row, Whistler/Blackcomb, British Columbia, garners the top honors.

``Adventure potential plays a big role of SKIING's selection criteria,'' says Editor-in-Chief Rick Kahl. ``That's what keeps Whistler/Blackcomb at number one, and what allowed Jackson Hole with its new open-boundary policy, to close the gap to the narrowest it's ever been.''

SKIING's Top Ten Editors' Picks are:

1. Whistler/Blackcomb, British Columbia
2. Jackson Hole, Wyoming
3. Squaw Valley USA, California
4. Mammoth, California
5. Alta, Utah
6. Vail, Colorado
7. Taos, New Mexico
8. Snowbird, Utah
9. Telluride, Colorado
10. Ajax, Colorado

(To see the individual write-ups of the top 50 resort winners, see SKIING magazine's press-only November issue preview at skiingmag.com/article/travel.cfm?alias_id=2116 beginning on October 17.)
SKIING's Adventure Guide 2001 divides ski areas into three categories. At a ``Skier's Mountain,'' the emphasis is on varied terrain, quality snow, and good skiers--everything else is secondary. ``Mountain Playgrounds'' are for skiers who want a full-resort experience; places where the only question is when to sleep. The ``Great Unknowns'' are some of the best-kept secrets in skidom. In addition to the 50 ski resorts reviewed, the magazine also names top-ten lists for value, powder, backcountry, glades, steeps, bumps, partiers, and terrain parks.

And to find out what goes on after the lifts--and bars--close, SKIING is conducting an online sex survey at www.skiingmag.com/sexsurvey.html. Participants are entered to win an all-inclusive trip to Aspen, Colorado. The sex survey results will be made public in mid-December.

SKIING is published by The Skiing Company, a division of Times Mirror Magazines based in Boulder, Colorado, that also publishes SKI, FREEZE and Skiing Trade News.
